Thriving in Health collaborated with FBG Group to deliver the Critical Incident Response Model strategy.

The key aim of this strategy was to improve healthcare worker mental health and wellbeing by managing exposure to potentially traumatic events using an evidence-based, and prevention-focused system response.

The intent of the Critical Incident Response Model strategy was to:

  • support managers and decision makers to create long-term and sustainable change through cultures, workplace practices, policies, systems and individual behaviour
  • create a consistent approach to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of healthcare workers exposed to potentially traumatic events

Emerging insights:

  • the Critical Incident Response Model moves beyond compliance, creating a culture of wellbeing
  • training for leaders and workers that is inclusive of best-practice evidence, theory and process can increase knowledge, skills and confidence
  • the Critical Incident Response Model toolkit helps organisations to protect and promote healthcare worker wellbeing through the implementation of a structured and consistent response to potentially traumatic events in the workplace

Resources for health services

The Critical Incident Response Model white paper and Toolkit were created for health services.

This white paper brings together findings from a comprehensive literature review that examined research on the impacts of critical incidents in healthcare and available evidence to support a leading approach to critical incident response.

This toolkit can help organisations to protect and promote healthcare worker mental health and wellbeing by strengthening their response to critical incidents in the workplace.
